10/20/98: I added credits photos and music from Kiss Before the Mirror to the filmography today. Check it out! If you're interested in seeing some RealVideo clips from the film let me know. The opening scene with Gloria Stuart is a tasty visual bonbon.

10/15/98: This week I had the rare privilege of seeing Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein projected, from film, in a real movie theatre. I never thought I would have the chance to do so. It's wonderful to see those beautiful images created by James Whale, Arthur Edeson and John Mescall, projected sharp and large. The prints — reportedly newly struck for this series — are absolutely breathtaking. You may be interested in seeing some photos I took.

The cinema is the Castro Theatre in San Francisco, CA. which is running a series of Universal Horrors in commemoration of Halloween.Other Whale gems will be screened as the series continues. Here's the complete schedule:

[Ian McKellen as James Whale on the set of Bride of Frankenstein, in the film Gods and Monsters]
6/15/98: The film Gods and Monsters (photo at right) played Sundance and other film festivals earlier this year to great acclaim. So far I have heard no word about a commercial release. Gods and Monsters is based on the fiction novel Father of Frankenstein by Christopher Bram. It deals with a James Whale (Sir Ian McKellen) in decline, and specifically with Whale's relationship with his young gardener, Clay Boone (Brendan Fraser) and his loyal housekeeper (Lynn Redgrave). The book is an excellent speculation on what Whale's final months might have been like, and I can't wait to get my chance to see the film.

Please note: I am interested in publishing Gods and Monsters clips and/or other electronic presskit items on this page for the benefit of other Whale scholars. I would appreciate any leads on available material, either still, motion or audio.

To whet your appetite, following are a few links to other sites containing information about the film.

Sir Ian McKellen Official Home Page has a section on Gods and Monsters, including production stills and behind-the-scenes photos, commentary, and quotes from reviews. Sir Ian portrays James Whale in the film.
